Research: Hypnosis Brings Groups Into Focus
Behind-the-scenes hypnotists help get to the bottom of brands.

Volvo equals safety. In focus group after focus group, participants said the same thing. So, Euro RSCG Worldwide, New York, did the obvious thing: It called in a hypnotist.

Members of these unique Volvo focus groups were asked to test-drive the car. Immediately afterwards they were hypnotized and asked their true feelings about the brand. It wasn't pretty: Many revealed that Volvo also equals being middle-aged. That idea "for some people was suffocating," said Michael Fanuele, head of planning at Euro. "Hypnosis helped get past the clichés. We needed the conversation to get to a deeper, more emotional place."

Volvo's not the only one going to that place. Focus group hypnosis is increasingly becoming a "secret weapon" for Fortune 500 companies and ad agencies alike, said Susan Spiegel Solovay, owner of Brandvisioning, New York. A former Grey exec, Solovay has been hosting such groups for a decade. Her clients include about dozen brands including blue-chip beer, soda and telecom companies as well as 20 different agencies.

A session, which consists of no more than eight subjects, takes two hours. The first 25 minutes are dedicated to introducing them to the process and getting them relaxed. "We need to ease the nervousness of what they've seen on television," said Solovay. "Everyone asks if we're going to make them quack like a duck. I wish stage hypnotists would stop doing that."

Once they are in an "alpha" state of relaxation, the hypnotist will ask them individually about topics like the first time they experienced a product. "We want to find out the imprint of the brand," said Hal Goldberg, owner of Qualitative & Quantitative Research, Laguna Hills, Calif. Goldberg, who trained Solovay, is a former Leo Burnett exec who has been conducting these groups for 35 years. "People can describe the cookies their mother made them when they were 5 in great detail. This drives adult behavior."

Avrett, Free & Ginsberg, New York, has been using focus group hypnosis for clients like Dewar's and Domaine Chandon for more than a decade. "I reach for this, depending on the client, whenever I can," said president Stuart Grau.

He says it's particularly useful when consumers don't have negative feelings about a product, but just aren't predisposed to buying it. Four sessions cost about the same as a typical round of focus groups ($50,000-75,000).

It's not for every client though, said Grau: "Some aren't comfortable with it. To some extent there could be some ethical concerns associated it." Goldberg and Solovay both stressed that being under the power of suggestion can't prompt consumers to say or do anything against their will. "It's not like we're asking people to take off their clothes and crumble Ritz crackers on their bosoms," said Fanuele, whose clients include the cracker brand. "It's about getting emotional content that is so much more vivid and colorful."

Others question the utility of focus group hypnosis. "It's worse than nonsense. It's a part of the continuing trend of American businesses moving away from actual expertise," said Douglas Rushkoff, author of Get Back in the Box: Innovation from the Inside Out (Harper-Collins). "They are wasting their marketing dollars."

Marc Babej, partner with the consultancy Reason, New York, concurs: "I have a particular venom for this area. These subconscious attitudes have little to do with purchase decisions. Most consumers navigate the marketplace based on the tangible benefits of the product."

Though no one tracks the overall industry, Goldberg expects to have his best year ever and new entrants are hitting the scene. Hypnotherapist Keith O'Neill, based in Newport Beach, Calif., jumped in three years ago. "Somebody at an ad agency asked me to do it," he said. "It's great because it removes the high school mentality of focus groups. Usually cliques develop: There is the bully, the shy people and those that just want to fit in with the group."

How deeply ingrained taglines and ad jingles are into people's minds was one surprise for O'Neill when he began working the field. "You ask them what the first thing they remember is and they say, 'Plop plop fiz fizz' or 'Where's the beef?'" Solovay uses Coca-Cola as a warm-up exercise because "everyone has Coke memories." Fanuele understands the skepticism. "A year ago I thought it was a silly little gimmick, but now I've been converted."

I like to keep up with all the media exposure our guy, Hollywood Hypnotist Kevin Stone, receives, but I'm finding it difficult to keep up these days as he is in high demand from high profile publications to express his expert opinion on hypnosis. Stone trance makes robots dance

Hollywood hypnotist Kevin Stone literally had people in a trance during his debut show at the Centre of Excellence on Friday.
Those who were not rolling around on the ground, were laughing uncontrollably, sobbing like babies and even vibrating like washing machines while hypnotised.
At the start of the show, brought to T&T by the Trinidad Broadcasting Company network, Stone called 20 eager volunteers to occupying seats on stage.
Ordering them to close their eyes, while placing their hands flat on their laps and feet flat on the ground, he spoke soft words as he urged them to relax.
“And as you relax, imagine that attached to one of your hands is a bouquet of 500 balloons, and as I attach the balloons to your hands, picture your hand lifting slowly off your lap,” he said to them.
As if they were robots, the volunteers, whose bodies seemed limp from the hypnotism, slowly lifted one arm in the air.
Stone snapped his fingers to get them out of the daze and ordered them to sleep. All hands dropped and the volunteers slumped on their chairs as they fell into a deep sleep.
A few even slid off their chairs and on to the ground.
In another instance, Stone had one volunteer say her ABCs like a kindergarten student, in a sing-song-voice.
He then made her close her eyes and told her at the snap of his finger she would forget the alphabet.
“The only thing you would remember is e-i-e-i-o,” he said.
The teen did, indeed, forget her alphabet and at the snap of Stone’s fingers she rattled off: “Old MacDonald had a farm, e-i-e-i-o.”
Even as the crowd rolled around in laughter, the teen argued with Stone she was saying the alphabet correctly.
At the end of the show, when told about their bizarre behaviour on stage, some of the volunteers were in disbelief.
n Pat Anderson, the most senior volunteer, said she was shocked when her niece told her about her antics on stage.
“She pushed me to go up on stage because I am a shy person. I don’t dance in front of people like that, laugh out like that, or even behave crazy like that, and when they told all those things I did on stage I could not believe it. I am embarrassed...”
n Solange Heywood, 26, described the hypnosis as a relaxing, out-of-body experience.
“Every time he spoke I got the urge to do exactly what he said. I can’t explain it, but I was just drawn to doing exactly what he said. And even when I tried to force myself to stop, I just could not, anyway,” she said.
Friday’s show was Stone’s first performance in Trinidad and his first tour in seven years.
“This is my first-ever show since the September 11 bombing in the US, and as soon as I got off the plane here I got a tremendous energy of happy, energetic people.
“I just love this country,” he said.
Born in California, Stone is described as a master hypnotist and is a board-certified hypnotist.

WILL + GRACE star DEBRA MESSING called on the hypnotist who helped her quit smoking when faced with having to play an "aquatic showgirl" - because she's terrified of being underwater.
The actress plays a Las Vegas, Nevada mermaid in DREW BARRYMORE's new film LUCKY YOU and was terrified when she found out there was no stunt double for the underwater scenes.
So she headed back to the hypnotist who cured her of her smoking habit five years ago, and asked him to give her a quick fix, so she could cope with 16 hours of aquatic work without freaking out.
She says, "I had a full mermaid costume... They put me in a tank with 2,000 fish and I had to lip-sync and dance underwater with sharks and stingray.
"It was the most traumatic thing I have ever experienced in my entire life but I'm proud I got through it.
"When they offered me the part, they said, 'We just wannna make sure that you don't have a phobia of water or fish... because you're not gonna have a stunt double,' and I was like, 'Oh c**p,' because that's one of my phobias.
"I did not mention this and then I went to a hypnotist and the hypnotist got me through it... He just talked me through it."

Latina siren EVA MENDES is so determined to stick to her annual New Year's resolution she has enlisted the help of hypnosis to conquer her nailbiting problem. The actress reveals she has set herself the task of letting her fingernails grow for years, but her resolution never seems to last more than a few days.
